The creator of the Jack Reacher series will receive his award as part of the An Post Irish Book of the Year television programme, airing on RTÉ One this Thursday at 10.15pm. The show will be hosted by Miriam O’Callaghan.
In winning the International Recognition Award, Lee Child now joins a host of other distinguished recipients including George RR Martin, David Walliams, Bill Bryson, Jeffrey Archer and Jilly Cooper.
Born in Coventry, raised in Birmingham, and now living in the US, Lee Child is one of the most successful thriller writers of all time, best known for the Jack Reacher series. He has sold over 100 million copies of his books worldwide, with Jack Reacher adapted for film and played by Tom Cruise. Lee is the recipient of many awards, most recently Author of the Year at the 2019 British Book Awards. He was appointed CBE in the 2019 Queen’s Birthday Honours List.
Lee Child, Recipient of the International Recognition Award, says:
“I’m very touched and delighted to receive this award, and want to thank all my readers and publishers in Ireland, the bookshops, the reviewers, and An Post for thinking of me. I wish I could be there in person to celebrate – but hey, 2020. I’m sure we’ll have a great time anyway.”
John Treacy, Chairperson of the An Post Irish Book Awards, says: “Irish booksellers have many reasons to be grateful to Lee Child. Notably, for his marvellous Jack Reacher series which has been delighting our customers for more than two decades, but also for making the cash registers sing so gloriously. A sure-fire bestselling series is a massive boon to the book-trade and a new Jack Reacher thriller is always eagerly anticipated here in Ireland. No writer deserves our International Recognition Award more than Lee Child. We congratulate him and wish him well with his future plans.”
The winner of the ‘An Post Irish Book of the Year 2020’ will also be revealed on the television show RTÉ One this Thursday 10th at 10.15pm.
